What this tool does

Enter your bill total, pick a tip percentage (or type your own), and set how many people are splitting the check. This tool instantly works out the tip amount, the grand total, and exactly what each person owes — including how much of that is tip — so nobody has to do the math on a napkin at the table.

How to use

  1. 1
    Enter the bill amount

Type the pre-tip total from the check into the bill amount field.

  2. 2
    Choose a tip percentage

Tap 15%, 18%, or 20% for common rates, or type a custom percentage if the service warrants more or less.

  3. 3
    Set the number of people

Enter how many people are splitting the bill. Leave it at 1 if you're covering the whole check yourself.

  4. 4
    Read the results

The summary cards show the tip amount, the total with tip included, and the per-person share — updated live as you adjust any field.

Use cases

  • Split a group dinner bill

Quickly work out what each person owes at a restaurant, including their share of the tip, without passing a calculator around the table.

  • Tip on delivery or takeout

Enter the order subtotal and a custom percentage to decide a fair tip for a delivery driver, especially in bad weather or for large orders.

  • Standardize tipping across a team

Use consistent presets (15/18/20%) so a group settles on one rate together instead of debating at the table.

  • Sanity-check a printed suggested tip

Verify that the tip amounts a receipt suggests actually match the percentages it claims, especially on larger bills.

FAQ

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?+

Etiquette varies, but tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the more common convention in most places since tax isn't part of the service being rewarded. Enter whichever amount matches your local norm — the math works the same either way.

How is the per-person amount calculated?+

The total (bill plus tip) is divided evenly by the number of people entered. This assumes an even split; if people ordered very differently, you'll want to itemize instead.

What's a typical tip percentage?+

15% is often considered the baseline for standard table service in the US, 18-20% for good service, and 20%+ for excellent service or delivery in bad conditions. Norms differ significantly by country, so adjust for your local convention.

Can I enter a tip amount instead of a percentage?+

This tool works in percentages so the split scales automatically with the bill. If you have a flat dollar tip in mind, divide it by the bill amount and multiply by 100 to get the equivalent percentage.

Is my bill information stored anywhere?+

No. All calculations happen locally in your browser as you type — nothing is sent to a server or saved after you leave the page.
